Madison firefighters return after New York City assistance mission

Five Madison firefighters returned safely from New York City last week after spending four days assisting rescue crews at the site of the World Trade Center.

Doug Freese, Paul Komarck, Mike Dibble, John Clark and Matt Schwister went to New York despite requests from officials there asking outsiders not to help because some of them knew New York firefighters and had not been able to find out if their acquaintances were alive. Once there, they discovered that everyone they knew had indeed survived.

Three-hundred forty New York firefighters are believed to have been killed when the twin towers of the World Trade Center collapsed after being struck by hijacked airliners Sept. 11.
