The end is near. Doomsday prophecies aside, the school year is nearly complete and for a lot of Badgers, myself included, it means our time in college is nearly over as well. Compared to the life ahead of us, college is but a small fraction of time. As short as it seemed, it has been one hell of a trip and one that will have a profound impact on me for the rest of my life. More than the friendships, classes, parties and Union Terrace, college is a remarkable opportunity to challenge yourself and in so doing, discover your potential.

The failure of America’s fourth estate

It’s difficult to have a citizenry who gives a damn about voting when they immediately associate politics as a shouting match between two sides who are constantly trying to undermine the other. There is the office of the presidency and then there is the President of the United States. There is the governorship and there is the governor. In both of these instances, the titles and the individuals themself are not synonymous but you must have civility when discussing the man or woman holding that office. When the media is critical of, and investigates Gov. Scott Walker or President Barack Obama’s policies it is healthy and just as much a part of the democratic process as voting, calling them names in an effort to boost ratings or web traffic, is not.

Battling mental health illness alone is never the answer

I have a therapist. I’ve never felt completely confident admitting that fact to people, even my immediate family. Now, however, I think it’s important, particularly for university students, to know that you are not alone in fighting your mental health problems. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, one in every four Americans will experience a mental health condition at least once in their life. It’s also important to know that anyone can be effected by a mental health problem. Abraham Lincoln, Isaac Newton, Ernest Hemingway, Winston Churchill, Terry Bradshaw, Princess Diana, Sheryl Crow, Jim Carrey, Ashley Judd, J.K. Rowling, Heath Ledger and, most recently, Robin Williams all suffered from mental health problems. It is not simply a poor person’s problem or a drug user’s problem.

News reports over winter break provided a flurry of headlines worth talking about, from the CIA torture report, gasoline prices falling to the lowest they’ve been in six years and President Obama restoring diplomatic relations with Cuba. All of these events possess a high level of significance, but none more-so than the terror attack in Paris Jan. 7 when two gunmen wearing masks and wielding assault weapons killed 12 people. Their target? A cartoon newspaper named Charlie Hebdo that prints satirical cartoons depicting the Muslim prophet Muhammad.

Looking at celebrities’ nudes is callous

Today, Vanity Fair released an interview with Jennifer Lawrence where she spoke about the celebrity nude photo leak. This is the first time she has responded publicly to the situation involving an Internet hack that published revealing photos of her and hundreds of other female celebrities Aug. 31 of this year. The victims of the hack were all female with the exception of one male’s photos who were revealed just days ago in the fourth round of hacks. Lawrence spoke with Vanity Fair’s Sam Kashner where she said, “Just because I’m a public figure, just because I’m an actress, does not mean that I asked for this.” She went on to say, “It does not mean that it comes with the territory. It’s my body, and it should be my choice, and the fact that it is not my choice is absolutely disgusting. I can’t believe that we even live in that kind of world. ”
