New to the Wisconsin Badgers football team this year is Nick Herbig, an Outside linebacker from Honolulu, Hi. Hailing from St. Louis School, Herbig stands at 6-2, 215 pounds. He was also the Defensive Player of the Year in Hawaii in 2019.

When Graham Mertz followed through with his commitment to Wisconsin and arrived on campus in early 2019, Wisconsin fans everywhere grew excited with the anticipation of having a true blue-chip prospect at quarterback. With expected starter Jack Coan out indefinitely with a foot injury, that excitement will finally pay off when the redshirt freshman gets his first college start against the Illinois Fighting Illini.

Veteran linebackers Zack Baun and Chris Orr aren’t in Madison anymore. The two former team leaders — now residing as members of NFL defenses — supplanted themselves in Badger lore last season with a combined 24 sacks: 12.5 for Baun and 11.5 for Orr, good for third and sixth all-time in Wisconsin single-season history, respectively.

In a program that prioritizes experience, you rarely see a true freshman crack the opening week depth chart, let alone earn a starting spot. That’s why it was so surprising to see freshman outside linebacker Nick Herbig listed as a co-starter for the Badgers in the team’s depth chart for the upcoming game against Illinois.

Things were not looking good for Fighting Illini Head Coach Lovie Smith coming into 2019. Losing season after losing season – with no signature program wins – was putting the former NFL head coach as one of the most likely coaches to be fired after the season.

Disaster struck for the Wisconsin football program Saturday as starting quarterback Jack Coan injured his foot at practice, according to Jeff Potrykus of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Coan’s injury will require surgery and will keep him out of action indefinitely.

UW has announced 2017 graduate and international soccer star Rose Lavelle as the featured speaker for the 2020 Winter Commencement on December 13th. Lavelle joins fellow Badger athletes JJ Watt, Russell Wilson and Pat Richter as the only athletes ever to give commencement speeches for the University of Wisconsin, and is the first female athlete to ever receive this honor.

Paul Chryst has certainly applied his calm, almost-emotionless demeanor to Wisconsin Football’s personnel decisions over his five full seasons as head coach thus far. Known for being patient with young talent, Chryst and his staff most recently redshirted five-star offensive lineman Logan Brown and the school’s highest-rated quarterback in history, Graham Mertz, last fall.

When the Big Ten announced a postponement of fall sports on Aug. 11, it was hard to muster any kind of optimism for the prospects of a 2020 football season. But, seemingly against all odds, the conference announced today that a season will be played after all, with kickoff taking place on October 23 and 24.

After a seemingly unceasing offseason, the NFL regular season is finally upon us. It’s an exciting time to be a football fan, as every team boasts at least a few dynamic players and almost every squad has some semblance of playoff hope. The 2020 NFL season will see established veterans attempting to cement their legacy, and a hungry and talented class of rookies looking to burst onto the scene. Among these players are many former Badgers in varying situations, looking to make or uphold their names in an increasingly balanced, competitive league.

President Donald Trump tweeted Wednesday morning that he had a “productive meeting” with Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren discussing plans for a 2020 Big Ten football season this fall. Trump added that a potential plan is “on the one yard line,” though there is no indication from the Big Ten that an official plan will be announced soon.

The Milwaukee Bucks chose not to take the court today for their scheduled playoff game against the Orlando Magic in order to bring more attention to the shooting of Jacob Blake, an unarmed Black man, by an officer of the Kenosha Police Department. The Milwaukee Brewers held a meeting later the same day and decided not to play against the Cincinnati Reds for the same reason.
