A patient trying to escape a medical facility assaulted a Madison police officer on the 1200 block of Regent Street Tuesday morning, according to a police report.

Security staff from an unknown medical facility called the Madison Police Department for backup around 9 a.m. after they were unable to capture run-away patient Charles Cleeland, 25, the report said.

Once the officer was able to catch up to Cleeland on Regent Street he attempted to calm down Cleeland, but Cleeland instead threw several punches at the officer and assisting security staff, according to the report.

According to the report, Cleeland pushed the officer so hard in the chest it caused the officer to fall backward and strike his head on the pavement. He suffered a head cut and a concussion.

Cleeland was arrested for battery to a police officer and was taken to jail, the report said.
