Ayaan Hirsi Ali

Nelson Cho / The Daily Cardinal

Former Muslim and feminist speaker Ayaan Hirsi Ali gave a controversial lecture at the Memorial Union Tuesday night as part of the Distinguished Lecture Series.

Over a thousand people endured hour-long lines and airport levels of security to attend the highly-anticipated event in which she delivered a message critical of Muslim society and called for increased freedom for Muslim women all over the world.

Hirsi Ali said she uses her personal experiences as a former Muslim to form her views on the treatment of Muslim women. Originally from Somalia, she fled to the Netherlands to escape an arranged marriage, and began to question much of what she had been taught.

“I had wholeheartedly embraced Islam,” Hirsi Ali says of her teenage years. “And yet, there was this deep part of me that rebelled, and I had questions about things that I had no right to ask questions about.”

She said those questions included the topics of modest dress for women and the view of women as the property of their husbands. She cited cases in the Arab world and in the U.S. where violence against women was justified through the Qur’an and Islamic teachings in illustrating her argument.

In countries under Islamic rule, Ali said, “It is law to disclude women from rights and freedoms enjoyed by men. Marriage and divorce, testimony in court, dress, inheritance. In these issues, Islam scripture is implicit that women are inferior to men.”

She issued a call to action for all Americans to fight against what she views as a human rights violation, stating the issue is more significant than most people realize.

“We must use intelligence and reason to confront what I see as one of the world’s greatest inequalities: the treatment of Muslim women. This inequality is not only a moral tragedy, but is a threat to global peace.”

Her speech met resistance from many in the audience. Shouts of “Allahu Akbar” were heard, which means “God is great” in Arabic.

Rashid Dar, president of the campus Muslim Student Association, says Ali is not giving an accurate picture of Islam or of Muslims, and fears possible ramifications of her speech.
“She’s trying to make it seem like Muslims ignore human rights violations. Well, we don’t. She oversimplifies and that’s at the root of the problem, that’s what can become dangerous for us in America,” Dar said.

Hirsi Ali said she thanked the University for providing a forum for free speech, but Dar said he questioned the motivations of bringing such an inflammatory speaker to campus.

“Would an anti-Semitic speaker have been brought to this campus? No,” He said. “But we accept Islamophobic speakers because we’re afraid, and she fits the bill for someone who can confirm our fears. “

Many audience members explicitly showed their support or opposition during the lecture, participation which was emblematic of the debate surrounding her visit.

Nelson Cho - I can't respond to you because the Cardinal has muzzled my American free speech. SHAME ON YOU CARDINAL! YOU COWARDS!

More "islamic teachings":

"Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued." -- Qur'an 9:29

"Therefore, when ye meet the Unbelievers, smite at their necks..." -- Qur'an 47:4 (beheading)

Book 019, Number 4366:
It has been narrated by 'Umar b. al-Khattib that he heard the Messenger of Allah say: "I will expel the Jews and Christians from the Arabian Peninsula and will not leave any but Muslim."

Gotta love that islamic "tolerance."

"Allah's Apostle was asked, "What is the best deed?" He replied, "To believe in Allah and His Apostle (Muhammad). The questioner then asked, "What is the next (in goodness)? He replied, "To participate in Jihad (religious fighting) in Allah's Cause." (Bukhari 1.2.25)

"To participate in Jihad in allah's cause"

DO YOU GET IT, PEOPLE? "Jihad" (Islamic holy war against "Infidels" - that's us) is "islamic teaching"

Do you get it? Hello - Any firing neurons out there?"

"Faith sucks. Everybody should give it up."
"the LESS seen of him, the better"
"why don't mr. DAR and free-speech-hating Mohammedan colleagues reside in islamic countries?"
"brutal barbaric Islam"

ohhhh I see.
so now who's the ones hating on minorities with different opinions?
Great job guys. You prolly made Dar feel kinda like Ali felt when she was looked down upon by the majority who thought they were absolutely right.

the point that i got from Ali's speech is that we should create an environment where people could voice their opinion, however different or thought wrong by the majority's, without being hated for their difference and simply put away.

Put yourself in one of the Muslim student's shoes walking up Bascom thinking there's bunch of people like you looking down upon them.
If it wasn't for your hating comments, Dar's "ramifications" would have been bullshit.
Now you just made his fears come true.

If that's what you wanted to do. Congrats.
Maybe you can go ahead and make his life even more miserable so that he can go to his countries and talk about how Americans hate Muslims and become a distinguished lecturer in HIS country.

The point is, hatred won't solve much

Don't you find it odd, that in all non-Muslim countries where women are free to wear whatever they want and free from compulsion or force that none of the non-Muslim women choose to cover themselves head-to-toe? If women truly, truly wanted to wear those stifling items of clothing, then why aren't even a tiny, teensy-weensy slim minority of infidel women wearing burqas and niqabs? One could take a wild guess: because they are not compelled to do so.

Richard Russell, be an atheist all you want, fine. But Christianity is the real deal.

Only Islam contains a Jihad doctrine. Only Islam contains "Kill the Infidels" as the central tenet of the Mohammedans' political ideology, masquerading as a "religion."

Christianity does not contain a Jihad doctrine. Jesus, the Son of God, teaches peace, love, compassion, and forgiveness. That's called the New Testament. Have you read it?

Meanwhile, here's what "allah," the Muslims' pagan moon god teaches:

"Kill non-Muslims wherever you find them. Lie in wait and ambush them, seize and capture them using every stratagem of war." - Qur'an 9:5

You will not find ANY analogous verse in Christianity. The above is a Jihad verse from the Koran. And, here's what Islam thinks of non-Muslims:

"Lo! those who disbelieve, among the People of the Scripture and the idolaters, will abide in fire of hell. They are the worst of created beings. (Koran 98:6)

That's what Islam thinks of non-Muslims. Islam is the "religion" of Hate and Intolerance.

Jesus is God.

islam is a hoax. A 7th century AD "Kill the Infidels and Disbelievers" hoax. And a plague on humanity. Why is the world plagued with Islamic Jihads in the early 21st century? Answer: The Jihad doctrine in Islam.

You know what "sucks?" Islam.

"Rashid Dar, president of the campus Muslim Student Association, says Ali is not giving an accurate picture of Islam or of Muslims, and fears possible ramifications of her speech."

All those who think that mindless faith is a good thing SHOULD fear the ramifications of challenges to it.

It is my fondest hope and desire that everybody will arrive at Ayaan Hirsi Ali's conclusion about faith, not only about the Islamic faith in particular but about faith in general, specifically including Christian faith.

Faith is the world's worst decision-making technique. It's like dividing by zero in math: Once you allow decisions to be made in the utter absence of supporting evidence — and frequently in the face of evidence to the contrary — you can basically "prove" anything you want. Thus faith is utterly, utterly useless to real people living in the real world. It's a complete waste of time and leads to terrible decisions.

Ambrose Bierce called it right when he defined "faith", in his Devil's Dictionary, as "belief without evidence in what is told by one who speaks without knowledge of things without parallel."

Nobody ever cites faith as a justification for a belief when some more reliable decision-making technique — such as logic, reason, confidence (in things), or trust (in people) — is available. Faith is only trotted out when someone desperately wants to believe an idea that falls under Archie Bunker's description: "Don't ya know what faith is? Faith is when you believe somethin' that nobody in their right mind would believe!"

Faith sucks. Everybody should give it up.

I'm trying to figure out what justifies your use of the word "controversial" in the headline. It is as plain as day that there are many Muslim countries around the world in which women do not have civil rights, and pointing it out is not controversial, DEFENDING or IGNORING that basic reality is what is controversial.

Now we need to invite ex-Muslims Nonie Darwish and Wafa Sultan. I just finished reading Ms. Sultan's book, "A God Who Hates." It should be required reading for all you PC Moonbats "useful idiots" out there who defend supremacist, totalitarian, genocidal Jew-hating Islam.

Why don't Mr. Dar and his free-speech-hating Mohammedan colleagues reside in islamic countries?

Brava Hirsi Ali! Telling the truth about barbaric misogynist Islam.

"Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has made the one superior to the other..." -- Qur'an 4:34

Arrogant Muslim lout Rashid Dar should be disciplined by the university for his deliberate shouting at Ms. Ali to silence her free speech. So like a Muslim male. And shouting "Allah akbar?" That sucks. There is no "allah." "Allah" is Warlord Mohamet, who commands mass-murder of non-Muslims:

"Kill non-Muslims wherever you find them. Lie in wait and ambush them, seize and capture them using every stratagem of war." - Qur'an 9:5

Of course the university won't levy any punishment on Dar because that would be "offending" a Muslim - and "Allah" forbid, we can't have that now, can we? Nope - political correctness will rule over civilized behavior.

Dar uses the inflammatory word "Islamophobia." There is no such thing. A phobia is an irrational fear. Whereas, it is 100% rational to fear (and despise) hate-filled 7th century AD Fascist/Nazi Islam. Islam is not a religion - Islam is a political ideology invented by a Warlord which has as it's main objective "Jihad" - Islamic holy war against "Infidels" and "Unbelievers."

Islam is a War/Conquest ideology invented by a self-proclaimed "prophet" Warlord who hated Jews and Christians, but especially Jews.

"Fight then against them till strife be at an end, and the religion be all of it Allah's." - Qur'an 8:40

People - fight back against brutal barbaric Islam so we don't have to worship a pagan moon deity that doesn't exist. So we don't have to live under barbaric and cruel and woman-hating shar'ia law - in which there is NO FREE SPEECH. Do you get that? There is NO freedom of speech in Islam. You want that?

Hirsi Ali is a courageous woman, just as Geert Wilders is the bravest man in Western Europe. The Muslims' Demographic Jihad combined with idiotic political correctness is currently destroying Western Europe. You want that for America? The 21st century march of Islam in which thousands of "Infidels" have been mass-murdered by Islamic Jihad, MUST BE STOPPED.

Brava Hirsi Ali! A Truth-Teller about Barbaric Misogynist Islam. (Gotta love those Black Hefty Bags with eyeholes - fabulous, aren't they?) Actually, I think arrogant shouting rude lout Rashid Dar should start wearing a Black Hefty Bag with eyeholes - the LESS seen of him, the better.
