The man who allegedly robbed Fraboni’s Deli, 822 Regent St., and put southern parts of UW-Madison’s campus on lockdown Sept. 28 was charged Friday with armed robbery.

According to Wisconsin court records, Marcus T. Chavous has repeatedly been in and out of trouble with the law. On Sept. 28, Chavous was suspected of showing a gun to an employee of Fraboni’s and then fleeing the scene only to go into the UW-Madison administration building on Park Street.

University officials locked down new Ogg Hall, Smith Hall and the Bursar’s Office while police searched for Chavous. He was later found that same day on the seventh floor of the administration building.

Chavous, whom Madison police named as a person of interest at the time of the incident, faces several years in prison if convicted on the one count of armed robbery as a repeat offender.

Assistant District Attorney Mike Verveer said Chavous wore a Department of Corrections-issued sweatsuit the same day of the Fraboni’s robbery. Verveer said after Chavous fled the scene, he ditched the sweatsuit, which had his initials inscribed on the tag.

“He has an extensive criminal past,” Verveer said.

Chavous’ Wisconsin criminal record stretches back to 1991.

Currently, another open case remains on Chavous, court records show. In that case, Chavous has been charged with allegedly carrying a concealed weapon and disorderly conduct.

However, in 2003, Chavous was found guilty of robbery with threat of force and sentenced to three years in a state prison with four years extended supervision, according to state records.

Verveer said as for the charge filed Friday, the fact that Chavous put UW-Madison on partial lockdown would be taken into account during the conviction.

Chavous is scheduled to appear back in court Oct. 18 for a preliminary hearing.
