The University of Minnesota Board of Regents unanimously approved a revised tuition reciprocity deal between Wisconsin and Minnesota Friday that will continue to allow students to attend public universities in the neighboring state without paying nonresident tuition.

The agreement had previously been approved by Gov. Jim Doyle, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system.

The state of Minnesota nearly ended the agreement in early June because Wisconsin residents currently pay less than Minnesota residents to attend Minnesota schools.

Beginning in fall 2008, admitted Wisconsin residents will still pay their home tuition rate at Minnesota schools, but the state of Wisconsin will pay a “tuition reciprocity supplement” directly to Minnesota schools to cover the difference between Wisconsin’s tuition rate and Minnesota’s rate.

Current Wisconsin funds go toward Minnesota’s general university fund, not specific colleges.
