Council overturns Alpha Epsilon Pi hazing suspension

By: UW Dietetics and Nutrition Club /The Daily Cardinal  - October 11, 2007

The Interfraternity Council announced Wednesday it voted to overturn the decision to suspend the UW-Madison chapter of Alpha Epsilon Pi, a social fraternity.

During a closed IFC session Oct. 8, AEPi appealed the sanctions passed May 13 by the Greek Judicial Board, but the IFC withheld the announcement to give time for fraternity members to learn of the final decision.

The frat had been suspended for the 2007-’08 academic year following an anonymous report of alleged hazing.

Drew Willert, IFC president, said following a presentation of an IFC Advisory Board investigation, conducted by three elected chapter presidents, AEPi members were able to present their case.

Willert said there is no discussion following both presentations, questions are only allowed during the presentations and the decision is determined by a secret ballot vote.

According to the official judgment statement, 22 representatives from member fraternities voted at the IFC meeting with a majority “15 votes to overturn the decision.”

The decision announcement was sent to AEPi Chapter President Jared Steinberg, the AEPi national office, Dean of Students Lori Berquam, UW-Madison Greek advisors and the Panhellenic Association president.
