UW Rec Sports, UHS, Wis. Union budgets pass

By: Lara Sokolowski /The Daily Cardinal  - March 15, 2007

The Associated Students of Madison Student Council approved the Recreational Sports, University Health Services and Wisconsin Union budgets at its meeting Wednesday.

The Rec. Sports budget included raising the minimum wage to $10.23 for all employees, as well as increasing faculty and staff membership fees for the first time ever over requests for segregated fees. The UHS budget was a “maintenance” budget, including funds for a new appointment system. The Union budget, however, sparked more of a debate.

The living wage and Union renovation referenda for about $3.3 million both passed earlier this year, but about an extra $85 per student per year taken out of segregated fees to fund the budget caused alarm for some ASM Student Council members. Other concerns included the loss of the Union’s Travel Center, which provides services such as taking passport pictures not offered elsewhere on campus. Still, the budget passed.

UW-Madison Black Law Students Association asked the Council to reconsider its travel grant after losing its lawsuit against ASM in Student Judiciary court, but having already received $600 from ASM, their request was denied.

The ASM bus pass budget was also approved.

As of press time, discussion had not yet begun for the UW System Board of Regents nondiscrimination provisions or for a resolution on higher education and student debt.
