Bite of the Week

By: Jay Storey /The Daily Cardinal  - March 11, 2007

Scotch Egg

Brocach Irish Pub, 7 W. Main St.

The Scoop: An Irish classic born in Scotland. A rich hard-boiled egg is wrapped in sausage, battered, and deep-fried. It may not be something you’ll dream about, but try it with a Guinness and you’ll wonder how the Irish ever had that potato famine.

Health Implications: Don’t let the deep fry scare you off. Eggs are back on the healthy list and the breading is surprisingly light and crisp.

Value: This is an experience to be had, not a bargain. But you’ll only shell out $3.50, and you’ll get an odd side of undressed greens and some scary hot mustard.

Grocery Grab

Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce

You’ve seen this stuff at all your favorite restaurants, and if you have any balls you know that this fiery red sauce can turn just about any cuisine into a palate pushing adventure. Why not bring the fun home?
