LGBT Campus Center keeps majority of proposed funding

By: Erica Pelzek /The Daily Cardinal  - October 27, 2006

The Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender Campus Center’s 2007-’08 proposed budget was left mostly intact by the Associated Students of Madison Student Services Finance Committee Thursday night.

SSFC zero-funded office supplies from various programs and cut approximately $350 allocated for condoms out of LGBTCC’s original budget of $115,179, leaving the center with a final budget of $114,648.

Greater University Tutoring Service, a student organization devoted to providing students tutorial services in conversational English, math, science and other academic areas, and Collegians for a Constructive Tomorrow-Madison, the UW-Madison chapter of “a national network of local student activists working together in the spirit of fellowship for constructive use and stewardship of our land and environment,” both had their budget hearings Thursday night.

The committee also discussed in open forum the election of its newest members during the Fall 2006 ASM elections, announced Monday night by the ASM Student Judiciary.

According to SSFC Chair and UW-Madison senior Zach Frey, the committee will train the new members for a week, and then they will begin to participate in the committee’s regular meetings and functions.

The newly elected committee members are UW-Madison junior Jenna Wieden, UW-Madison junior Alexander Schmus and UW-Madison junior Tony Rodriguez. There are four empty seats on SSFC right now, meaning the committee is still short of one representative, according to Frey.

The committee will reconvene for its regular in-session meeting Monday, Oct. 30.
