The Student Services Finance Committee fully endorsed the proposed budget of the WSUM-FM student radio station and announced a pending lawsuit at its meeting Monday evening.

SSFC Chair Zach Frey announced that the Tenant Resource Center is suing SSFC. Frey, a UW-Madison senior, said he received notice of the lawsuit today and no further information was available.

SSFC approved WSUM’s budget at $307,589, which included an increase of $10 from the proposed budget with no cuts and praised WSUM for its clear, responsible budget.

“I think the committee weighed the factors very carefully and came to a good decision—certainly one we can live with,” David Black, general manager of WSUM, said after the SSFC vote.

”We think we’ve proven over the years to be fiscally responsible […] and we think we provide a great service to students,” Black said, adding WSUM takes care to foster a good relationship with SSFC by writing a responsible budget and fully answering members’ questions.

“I’m always impressed by the budget that WSUM presents us. It’s always fiscally responsible and transparent,” said Jackie Goessl, secretary of SSFC and UW-Madison junior.

The committee also listened to the budget hearing presentation of the LGBT Campus Center. The LGBTCC’s current budget request stands at $115, 179. According to LGBT, money goes primarily to fund staff, with programming costs as the next largest expenditure.

“Our programs are extremely important, but they’re low cost” compared to the services provided, said Eric Trekell, director of the LGBTCC. Trekell said the LGBTCC collaborates with other student organizations whenever possible to better use their funding. Their center sponsors resource fairs, mentoring services, and a library connected to the MadCat system.

Representative Mike Look resigned his position on SSFC prior to the motion to remove him from the committee for having violated SSFC’s strict attendance policy.
