Protestors for government reform rally at Capitol

By: Charles Brace /The Daily Cardinal  - September 19, 2007

Citizens in favor of ethics and finance reform held a rally on the steps of the Capitol on Tuesday. Its organizers dubbed the event as the “Storm for Reform”.

The banging of pots and pans was encouraged at the rally, with between 60 and 100 people in attendance. The use of noise making devices was in tribute to journalist Molly Ivins.

“We need people in the streets, banging pots and pans and demanding. “Stop it, now!’” Ivins said according to a statement by the ethics reform group Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, which participated in the rally.

WDC Director Mike McCabe said in a statement that the rally was in favor of ending the budget stalemate, among other reform issues. The budget process has been used to draw campaign contributions to state legislators according to McCabe.

“Citizens want our state lawmakers to stop the partisan bickering,” McCabe said.

The rally was also to draw attention to ethics and finance reform that has yet to be signed into law, according to McCabe.
