Be safe, smart on mifflin street

By: The Daily Cardinal Editorial Board /The Daily Cardinal  - May 2, 2008

As the academic year comes to an end, thousands of students will once again descend upon the Mifflin Street Block Party. As security concerns increase, so does enforcement of necessary laws to ensure the safety of UW-Madison students enjoying one last hurrah before finals begin.

That being said, know what you can and can’t do while celebrating with the swarm of others present for the festivities.

Similar to 2007’s Freakfest celebration, three cameras will survey Mifflin Street in addition to over 100 police officers. Additionally, police have tightened noise restrictions and re-zoned “public property.” Any person caught drinking on a city sidewalk, street, terrace or alley will receive a costly citation, regardless of age. Any party’s noise heard from three houses away will be charged as well.

Mifflin Street Block Party is a communal event celebrating the coming of spring and the conclusion of a year of hard work. That in mind, don’t hesitate to celebrate, but remember that the police are watching and their authority is absolute.

Dean of Students Lori Berquam’s requests, such as “go out with people you know and trust” and “exercise caution in any public setting” are to be taken seriously. Regard safety as highly as you would fun at all times.
