Three UW-Stout students died because of a fire in Menomonie, Wisc., early Saturday morning.

April Englund, 21, Scott Hams, 23, and Amanda Rief, 20, were in second-floor bedrooms of a duplex after emergency services received a call at 3:32 a.m. Smoke was seen coming from the first and second floors and the basement, according to UW-Stout University Communications.

Medical responders attempted to resuscitate the students and took them to the Red Cedar Medical Center where it was announced all had died, a university statement said.

All three died from smoke inhalation, according to Lt. Wendy Stelter at a news conference.

“Our hearts go out to family and friends of these students. The whole campus is grieving for the loss of these fine young people,” UW-Stout Chancellor Charles Sorensen said in an e-mail sent to students. “We will support the family and friends of these students in any way we can.”

The six students who lived in the other section of the duplex were not harmed.

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Menomonie fire department investigators believe the fire was likely accidental. Officials have not yet released information on what specifically caused the fire. Hams and Reif were both majoring in business administration, according to a university statement, with Hams scheduled to graduate in May. Englund majored in retail merchandising and management.

Menomonie is approximately 200 miles north west of Madison.
