Johnny Depp movie to be filmed in Wis.

By: The Daily Cardinal /The Daily Cardinal  - February 27, 2008

The Universal Pictures movie “Public Enemies,” starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale, will be filmed in Wisconsin, according to a Tuesday announcement.

Gov. Jim Doyle said in a release that the company had finalized an agreement with the state Department of Commerce on tax credits for filming in Wisconsin.

“I can’t wait for the rest of the world to see on the big screen what we enjoy every day—the great state of Wisconsin,” Doyle said.

The film deals with the search for bank robber John Dillinger (Depp) by FBI agent Melvin Purvis (Bale) during the 1930s.

The movie is the first large production filmed in Wisconsin since new tax incentives for filmmakers started on Jan. 1, 2008.

The company is expected to spend around $20 million in the state.

UW-Madison Director and alumnus Michael Mann said he chose Wisconsin for its many historical buildings. Filming will take place in Wisconsin and areas around Chicago.
