Badger Market in Union South to accept SNAP benefits

The Wisconsin Union announced Wednesday that they will soon accept food stamps at Badger Market in Union South.

The Union’s announcement comes nearly five months after Flamingo Run in Gordon Dining Hall began accepting the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, which provide food assistance to low-income individuals and families in an effort to reduce food insecurity.

According to a release from the Wisconsin Union, a date for when Badger Market will begin accepting the benefits has yet to be determined.

Once a date is determined, SNAP participants will be able to use their benefits to buy some types of food and beverages at the Badger Market in Union South, such as cereal, fruit and other approved items, according to the release.

The Wisconsin Union team is currently in the process of preparing the store’s systems to accept the benefits — including installing SNAP Electronic Benefit Transfer card scanners — and meet UW-Madison Purchasing Services requirements.

“Increasing food accessibility on campus is important to who we are at the Wisconsin Union,” Carl Korz, associate director for dining and hospitality services, said in the release. “This is a step forward in addressing food insecurity on campus.”
