Shoplifter pulls knife on State Street smoke shop employee, police say

Madison police are searching for a man who reportedly pulled a knife on an employee at a State Street hookah shop Wednesday night when he was caught shoplifting.

The 20-year-old female employee was not hurt.

Police responded to the incident at Azara Hookah, located on the 400 block of State Street, around 9:02 p.m., Madison Police Department Sgt. Eugene Woehrle said in an incident report.

When the employee attempted to stop the suspect from leaving with unpaid merchandise, he pulled out a knife and swung it at her. The suspect left and ran toward University Avenue.

The suspect is described as a 5-foot-7 “mixed race” male who is approximately 18 years old. He has black hair, a "chunky face" and muscular build, police said, and was last seen wearing a grey zip-up and dark pants.
