What’s on the ballot in Tuesday’s election

Several races on the ballot in Tuesday’s municipal election—including those for judicial, education and city posts—are contested. Here’s what to expect for community members heading to the polls with downtown and campus addresses.

Competing for state superintendent, the head of Wisconsin’s public education system, are two-term incumbent Tony Evers and school superintendent Lowell Holtz. The two have stark differences in policy platforms, most notably on expanding private school voucher programs.

Incumbent Ald. Zach Wood, District 8, and John Terry Jr. are vying for the Common Council seat representing campus. Wood has said he would focus on campus safety, affordable housing and sustainability if reelected. As a formerly homeless individual, Terry has said he would use his background to focus on helping individuals in Madison without housing.

Attorneys Marilyn Townsend and Jill Karofsky are facing off to fill the Branch 12 seat on the Dane County Circuit Court. Both have said they would focus on serving disadvantaged individuals in the justice system during the two-year term, but differ in how they would achieve that goal.

Two Board of Education seats for Madison Metropolitan School District are also up for grabs. Kate Toews and Ali Muldrow are vying for Seat 6. Nicki Vander Meulen was previously competing for Seat 7 against incumbent Ed Hughes, until Hughes dropped out in February due to family health issues.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. Residents can find out where to vote through the county clerk’s website
