Berquam announces breast cancer diagnosis

Dean of Students Lori Berquam committed Friday to continuing her work despite announcing she has been diagnosed with breast cancer and will begin chemotherapy treatment next week.

Berquam said in a statement that she will “look a little different” at commencement ceremonies May 12 and 13, as she will no longer have hair following the start of treatment. She said she may not be able to go every event, but she will still be seen around campus regularly.

She also said in the statement she has seen the UW-Madison community support others that have been touched by cancer and that she is comforted by this. Berquam noted she has been inspired by the numerous student groups who participate in the fight against cancer, and hopes to inspire others as well.
