Alleged drunk driver collides with taxi on West Dayton Street, flees scene

An alleged drunk driver crashed into a taxi on West Dayton Street—injuring a 55-year-old passenger—and drove away early Saturday morning, the Madison Police Department said Monday.

Ulices Lopez Guadarrama, 23, was arrested for driving while intoxicated and causing injury, a hit-and-run involving injury, running a red light and driving without insurance, according to MPD Public Information Officer Joel DeSpain.

Guadarrama reportedly ran a red light before colliding with the cab and driving away. His front bumper broke off in the crash, DeSpain said, allowing officers to run his license plate and identify him.

A Dane County sheriff was able to spot the suspect near the intersection of Campus Drive and University Avenue and arrested him.

The passenger suffered a head cut and other injuries. The taxi driver was not hurt.
