F.H. King applies efficient habits to its finances, receives budget approval

Student organization F.H. King’s budget for the 2017-’18 fiscal year was approved by the Student Services Finance Committee Monday.

F.H. King boasted the second lowest returns on their budget of registered student organizations for the previous fiscal year, using nearly 96 percent of their funding and returning only about 4 percent. This spending went toward hosting more than 60 events throughout the school year—not including daily garden hours—and harvesting more than 5,000 pounds of fresh produce in their student-run garden.

Changes in the new budget from that of the previous fiscal year include a nearly $700 salary increase for the garden director position during the academic year, a five-hour increase in hours for the education director in the summer and a five-hour decrease in hours for the programming director.

The group also requested a $500 raise in supplies funding in order to invest in seeds for the garden and much-needed gardening tools.

F.H. King will also look to invest much of their increased budget in their programming. Requested increases in the programming portion of their budget are intended to go toward food and supplies for their Winter Workshop and Spring Garden Festival Honorarium.

The group also plans on using funds to send 10 members to the MOSES Organic Farming Conference, a weekend-long event focused on the organic and sustainable agricultural community and practices in the Midwest.

While the number of members being sent raised questions from SSFC Vice Chair David Morel regarding the absolute necessity of sending such a large group, F.H. King assured the committee that all 10 members are crucial for taking full advantage of such a large conference.

SSFC approved the budget at $82,121.70.
