UW-Madison graduate and advocate for women’s financial equality died Thursday

Lorna Jorgenson Wendt, a UW-Madison graduate and influential leader in the fight for women’s financial equality in marriage, died Feb. 4.

Jorgenson Wendt’s divorce inspired her to help other men and women understand the concept of financial equality during and after a marriage, according to a UW-Madison release. She established the nonprofit Equality in Marriage Institute in 1998, which “helped hundreds of thousands of men and women across the country better manage their marriages, their transitions and their lives,” according to the release.

This past year, the institute developed into the Money, Relationships and Equality Initiative (MORE) within the School of Human Ecology at UW-Madison. The initiative provides outreach to help men and women establish financial equality within their relationship. MORE also strives to educate women on their role in finances “while embracing central questions of self-worth, purpose, and meaning-seeking throughout life,” according to the press release.

Until the time of her death, Jorgenson Wendt continued to advocate for equality within relationships and households. She made several public appearances on TV and appeared at speaking events across the country. Jorgenson Wendt was recognized by many magazines and books as being a pioneer for educating women on their financial power in marriage and divorce.

In addition to her influential role with MORE, Jorgenson Wendt was a member of the University of Wisconsin’s Women’s Philanthropy Council and served on the boards of visitors for the UW School of Music and College of Letters & Science.
