Anti-abortion group endorses Thompson

The state's largest anti-abortion group endorsed former U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson, R-Tenn., Thursday, despite Thompson working for a law firm that lobbied for an abortion rights group in the 1990s.

According to the LA Times and New York Times, Thompson lobbied for the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association when he worked for the Arent Fox law firm in the 1990s. His firm was assigned with lobbying the first Bush administration to make it easier for federal money to be used for abortion counseling at clinics.

Barbara Lyons, executive director for Wisconsin Right to Life, said Thompson's work at the law firm was considered, but said his voting record mattered more and he likely had no decision on what groups the firm represented.

The National Right to Life committee endorsed Fred Thompson because he has a 100 percent pro-life voting record,"" Karen Hanretty, deputy communications director for Thompson's campaign, said on the endorsement from the national anti-abortion group.
