The winter solstice is not for another three weeks, but temperatures in Wisconsin keep falling.

According to WISC-TV 3 Chief Meteorologist Gary Cannalte, a mounting cold front in Canada is responsible for the chilly temperatures and brisk winds in Madison. He said the system has gained enough strength to impact the area over the next week or longer.

Cannalte’s forecast calls for temperatures struggling to climb into the 30s with lows falling into the teens. Average highs for this time of year hover in the mid to upper 30s and lows typically only drop to the 20s.

Still, with winds whipping at 35 miles an hour in some areas on Tuesday, wind chills dipped into the teens. Cannalte said “it could be a lot worse,” all things considered. He said snow could dramatically decrease the already low temperatures.

While temperatures and winds seem miserable at the moment, Cannalte said Madison has been lucky with abnormally warm winters over the past few years.

“Believe me, this is nothing,” Cannalte said.
