N. Carroll Street apartment fire forces residents, UW students out of building

By: Quinn Craugh /The Daily Cardinal  - November 12, 2007

Early Saturday morning an apartment fire on North Carroll Street left more than 30 people—most UW-Madison students—homeless after Madison firefighters spent several minutes battling the flames.

According to firefighters, no one in the apartment suffered injuries from the blaze at 505 N. Carroll St. The seven-story apartment complex houses mostly UW-Madison students, who were displaced from the building through today, if not longer.

Madison authorities said most of the residents are staying with family or friends for the time being. The fire was called in at about 5 a.m. Saturday. Fire officials said flames could be seen shooting out of the building blocks from the scene. They also said residents yelled and knocked on doors in an effort to safely evacuate the burning building. Firefighters battled the blaze for nearly 15 minutes. The expected damage to the building is more than $200,000.

The hardest hit floor of the apartment was the sixth floor, which suffered smoke and fire damages. Other floors suffered water damage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. UW Dean of Students Lori Berquam and other university officials went to the scene to assist and comfort students.
