UW-Madison’s Wisconsin Singers, a song and dance ensemble, will celebrate its 40th anniversary this weekend with campus performances.
According to Robin Whitty-Nobotny, director and producer of the Wisconsin Singers, the goal of the group is to promote the visibility of student performers on campus and around the state.
“Over the course of the last 40 years Wisconsin Singers has helped to raise more than one million dollars in scholarships for other UW Students,” Whitty-Nobotny said. “It’s really a cross-campus organization.”
The theme of the show is the number 40, in honor of the organization’s anniversary, said Whitty-Nobotny. Featured songs include pieces from Wicked and Hairspray, as well as pieces by Britney Spears, Shakira and Michael Jackson.
“Over the course of the 90-minute show, you’ll see music in all different genres,” she said. “All of the medleys have to do with the number 40.”
Nick Coorough, UW-Madison senior and company director, said the singers learn anywhere from 70 to 100 songs per year. During a dance camp held approximately 20 days before the beginning of the semester, the Singers practiced their choreography for up to 12 hours a day for 18 days straight.
“In 18 days we learn the entire show,” said Coorough. “No matter what, we have to be back at 9 a.m. the next day, Sunday, holiday, whatever it is during those 18 days.”
Leah Miller, UW-Madison senior and vocal captain, said every year the Wisconsin Singers performs its entire show once on campus.
“[It’s] one of the best performances of the year because we’re performing for our peers,” said Miller. “It’s the one place where we can sing the Wisconsin Medley and everyone’s singing along.”
The 40th anniversary shows are Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Wisconsin Union Theater. Tickets can be purchased in advance through the Union Box Office, student tickets cost $10 and adult tickets cost $20. Remaining tickets will be sold at the door for $2 more.
“It’s an evening filled with all sorts of variety,” Whitty-Nototny said. “I can’t tell you how entertaining it is.”
