Wisconsin cut out of Big Ten Tournament with loss

By: Crystal Crowns /The Daily Cardinal  - November 5, 2007

The Wisconsin women’s soccer team (2-8-0 Big Ten, 6-11-1 overall) went scoreless on the road against Big Ten foe Northwestern Friday night in its 3-0 loss. Because of this loss, the Badgers did not have a strong enough record to qualify for postseason play.

Northwestern improved to 4-4-2 in the Big Ten and 9-6-4 overall and received the No. 7 seed in the Big Ten Tournament. Wisconsin was among the bottom three teams in the Big Ten who were not invited to participate in the tournament.

Junior forward Taylor Walsh, sophomore midfielder Krista Liskevych and senior defender Shannon Terry each took two shots in the game for Wisconsin. All three of these Badgers registered one shot on goal. Only one other Wisconsin shot was taken by senior defender Ann Eshun.

Northwestern had 16 total shots on goal compared to Wisconsin’s seven.

The first goal was scored by the Wildcat’s senior midfielder Shannon Schneeman just under 32 minutes into the game. Sophomore midfielder Alicia Herczeg and junior defender Laura Janowitsch were both credited with the assist.

Almost 10 minutes later, Schneeman passed the ball to freshman forward Sam Greene who scored Northwestern’s second goal of the night. This put the Wildcats up 2-0 at halftime.

Seven minutes into the second half Kelsey Hans scored the third and final goal for Northwestern, unassisted.

Wisconsin’s senior goalkeeper Lynn Murray, who did not get playing time early in the season due to an injury, recorded five saves in the game but gave up three. Northwestern senior goalkeepers Lauren Johnston and Leslie Gittings combined for three stops.

Wisconsin graduates six seniors this season in Eshun, Katy Meuer, Lynn Murray, Lauren Rudzinski, Marissa Sarkesian and Terry. First-year head coach Paula Wilkins brought her overall coaching record to 125-30-12.
